Sometimes mental health difficulties do not look obvious from the outside.
You may continue going to work, managing your responsibilities, meeting people and doing everything you are “supposed” to do and yet, internally, you may feel exhausted, overwhelmed, disconnected or emotionally drained.
You may even find yourself thinking:
“Nothing is really wrong with me. I should be able to handle this.”
But struggling does not always mean that you have stopped functioning.
Some signs that it may be time to seek professional support
You may benefit from counselling or therapy if you notice:
Constant overthinking or worrying
Feeling emotionally exhausted for no clear reason
Difficulty enjoying things you previously enjoyed
Irritability or frequent mood changes
Problems with sleep or concentration
Feeling overwhelmed by everyday responsibilities
Repeated relationship conflicts
Low confidence or excessive self-criticism
Difficulty coping with a major life change
Feeling stuck even though you are trying hard to feel better
You do not need to wait until things become “severe” before asking for help.
Therapy is not only for crisis situations
Counselling can also be a space to understand yourself better, identify unhealthy patterns, develop healthier coping strategies and learn how to respond differently to difficult thoughts and emotions.
For some people, therapy may focus on anxiety or depression. For others, it may involve relationship concerns, stress, self-esteem, trauma, life transitions or personal growth.
The goal is not simply to “stop feeling bad.”
It is to understand why you are feeling this way and what can help you move forward.
One important reminder
You can be successful, responsible and productive — and still need emotional support.
Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Sometimes, it is a way of taking yourself seriously.
If you have been feeling emotionally overwhelmed, stuck or unlike yourself for some time, speaking with a qualified mental health professional can be a useful first step.
